Counseling Internship
The counseling internship at Oak Lawn Family Service prepares the advanced masters student to provide individual, couple and family counseling to clients with a wide range of social and mental health problems. The internship lasts a minimum of two trimesters, but more often the student will take close to twelve months from the time they begin their internship until they graduate. The interns are expected to spend a minimum of twenty hours a week at the agency. They will need to be available during the day, some evenings and when necessary on Saturdays. The program is open to both community counseling and marriage and family counseling interns. Interns are provided two hours of individual supervision and two hours of group supervision weekly. We only accept interns from The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Program approved master’s programs.
Social Work Internship
First Year Masters in Social Work students will be able to learn to provide intake, assessment and outreach services. They will learn about community resources and become familiar with local agencies. They will also learn interviewing skills and when deemed ready will be able to carry a small psychotherapy caseload.
Second year Masters in Social Work students will function as staff therapists under the supervision of two senior clinical Social Workers. They will participate in a weekly seminar where they will be able to present cases and review didactic material on such issues as child therapy, domestic violence, and couple therapy. Students will need to work some evening or Saturday hours in order to be available to clients who work during the day. Mental Health Concentration MSW students are able to learn to provide intake assessments and outreach services. They learn about community resources and become familiar with local agencies. They improve their interviewing skills and carry a psychotherapy caseload of six to nine clients. Their clients may be seen in individual, marital, or family therapy. Their problems may range from mild adjustment disorders to serious mental illness. They will become familiar with the DSM-IV diagnostic process. They also learn the various administrative duties that are required to operate a social service agency.
The agency is not wed to one theoretical model, but staff therapists make an effort to keep current with the best practices in the field. Most have psychodynamic and family systems training, but also use cognitive-behavioral and other methods that may fit the needs of the clients. We only accept students from The Council on Social Work Education approved programs.
