About Oak Lawn
Oak Lawn is a suburb of 57,000 residents located southwest of of the city of Chicago. The Village was incorporated in 1909 (See History) and will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2009. It's general boundaries are 87th - 115th streets from north to south and Pulaski to Harlem Avenues from east to west.
The Village government is comprised of a Mayor and six Village trustees. The six trustees represent the six districts within the village and are elected to four-year terms by the voters in each of their respective districts. The current mayor of Oak Lawn is Dave Heilmann, who was elected in 2005.
The Village has 400 full time employees, a state of the art library, and an excellent staff from finance to safety, providing top notch services to residents on a daily basis. The 2008 budget for Oak Lawn was $97.5 million.
Oak Lawn has a terrific parks system operated by the Oak Lawn Park District. There are over 300 acres of parks and recreational facilities, including playgrounds, walking paths, baseball fields, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, swimming pools, an indoor ice arena, two fitness centers, a theatre, and an 18-hole golf course.
Oak Lawn is the home of Advocate Christ Medical Center and Hope Children's Hospital, one of the most comprehensive providers of pediatric care in the state. The medical center is a leader in cardiology, pediatrics, surgical services, oncology, women’s services and emergency medicine.
Oak Lawn has an excellent public education system with many elementary schools, including Kolb, Lieb, Harnew, Columbus Manor, Covington, Hannum, Hometown, Kolmar, and Sward. Oak Lawn has two public middle schools, Oak Lawn–Hometown Middle School, which opened in 2005 and Simmons Middle School. Five Catholic grammar schools include St. Louis de Montfort, St. Germaine, St. Catherine, St. Linus, and St. Gerald. There are two public high schools, Oak Lawn Community High School and Richards High School and within 1 mile are are 5 Catholic High Schools.
